b) Why did supersonic interceptor planes take a route over the ocean which is what they're supposed to do unless war has been declared?
c) Why did an unarmed C130 transport plane with a top speed of 340 knots not do anything to stop a Boeing 757 travelling at 460 knots?

d) Even if the C130 had been armed and faster, what - precisely - was it supposed to do, given that, while the plane was still in the air, the passengers may well have survived (as per normal hijackings), but shooting it down would condemn them all?
