the film still works when copied, at least until the polarising version of 3D comes along...

It's still possible to pirate a 3D film, especially one like avatar where the 3D is quite subtle and many scenes don't look all that blurry with the glasses off. or if you're really clever you can adjust the shutter speed and cut most of one of the stereoscopic images, it isn't perfect and would look pretty crap but pirates have never really cared about that anyway.
