surely a polarising lens on the camcorder would allow recording in 2d though

Exactly
Or (if such things exist) some kind of polarising prism(s) to direct the left and night images to separate CCDs so they can be recorded. The picture can be easily re-merged in post-production and dropped on to the format of your choice.
