Iron Man character is supposed to be a bit of a dick, and downey plays him really well.
Thor was just meh.

Damnit, I liked Thor.
Consciously cheesy and grandiose without alienating. Most of all, fun.

The reason it worked for me was that it knew it's source material was hokey and played it as such. You couldn't play a story like that straight without it being laughed at, so use that reaction and make it fun. That and I thought the actors playing all three of the main characters - Thor, Loki and Odin - were really REALLY good.
