That Saudi would become a target for the next US led invasion, running under the guise of "lets get rid of oppression and Sharia Law" (Sharia Law seems to be the new Communism and Arabs the new Commies in the propaganda war)
But what of the billions of pounds and dollars of weapons Saudi buys every year? Those deals buy an awful lot of protection and "respect". I think they are safe for a few years yet, at least until their oil runs out.
Of course, all these equatorial regions could start investing in producing the world's solar electricity, ready for the shift having no oil will bring. They have something extraordinarily saleable right there. Some of the poorest, most oppressed countries in the world could have us on our knees, buying their electricity in a few years.

...using areas geographically suited to producing energy (be it wind, solar, wave, geothermic or hydroelectric) and dedicating them entirely to the production of hydrogen is the way forward I think. While it may not be as efficient as using the electricity directly, it does mean other areas not suited to utilising the natural environment can benefit.
Just need to figure out a way to store and transport it safely...

...seem to offer a decent solution to storing and transporting hydrogen at low pressure.
