my ruskie mate won't be happy about this. If they had done this in the UK, what would they have got? I'm guessing if you go in to a Church without permission and start singing something rude you might get told off, wouldn't imagine jail time would happen though would it?

Even in the USA you'ld only get a caution and they're supposed to be the bad guys these days.
However governments that come about out of revolution tend to fear protest or decent and come down hard on it because they know how dangerous it is.

I suppose if they were "rioting and looting" as the article suggests then that is fair enough.
Can't really formulate any conclusions without knowing the evidence, some of the london rioters got stiffer sentences than that. If they were just innocently protesting then yeah thats a bit fucking harsh. I really don't know alot about the situation, I don't even know if the police aggravated it in the first place before they started shooting. I wasn't really paying attention.
Edit: oh I see, the police shot a couple of G's and then everyone kicked off, just like london then.

some of the London rioters smashed shop windows and carried stuff off.
In fact that's mostly what went on.
After hurricane Katrina, they were shooting looters on sight.

if you look up the videos,
they seemed to be arresting people whenever they felt like it. I imagine some behaved worse than others, though.
