The purpose of design isn't usually to obfuscate.
Why base your hiring of a web designer, whose purpose is to create things which communicate ideas so clearly that you don't even notice it happening, on the solving of a riddle which is literally the opposite of that?

A colleague of mine recognised a couple of the icons as covers of famous design books. But couldn't guess the others. And if you did go for it how would you know you'd go it right? I suppose it helps ween out the time wasters maybe?

seem to have always done this with a puzzle.
Not sure what the answer is, but the last one is an out-of-date edition of Don't Make Me Think, so that's an O.
