Grammatical gender is indeed silly, though the cases would be easier if we thought the English ones.
But German spelling is very, very regular; if a word is spoken clearly you rarely have any trouble spelling it. E.g I can’t quite remember exactly what “Aktiengesellschaft” means but spelling it is a piece of piss.
