This is a link post TV Tricks of the Trade
How easy it is to edit interviews to change the meaning of what people are saying. Simple and much more effective than you might think. Check it out and learn something.

posted it yesterday but that version was blocked in the UK

editing is taken for granted unless its analysed in this way. Reminded me of a few tips too .

This is a normal post I love it when I start watching a clip and then groan when I realise its over 15mins long
Then end up watching it until the end. Well done

This is a normal post I enjoyed that, thanks.
As a science radio journalist, I'm well aware of how easy it would be to distort meaning. I think it's often done accidentally by journalists who do not have a background in science; so are unaware of the nuances of scientific language, but exactly the same techniques can be deployed to further an agenda.

Do you find it near impossible to really enjoy consuming media now? I often wince at poor edits and bad cuts!

This is a normal post Hmmmm
I'm sorry, but that's nonsense. What point is he making? That cutaways are a device for distorting an interviewee's words? That all cutaways are doing this? That TV journalists constantly misrepresent interviewees? That all journalists are "unscrupulous", as he says?

Yes, some newspapers have been known to do it, but TV in Britain is heavily regulated by OFCOM and anything like it would be picked up on and the organisation would be punished.

The example he uses is from an obscure programme on conspiracy theories, so you should already have a large pinch of salt at hand. It's not, you'll note, from a reputable news programme like the BBC, ITV or Sky.

It just doesn't happen.

This is a normal post I'm more shocked by the fact
that June "make mine a double" Sarpong is now doing a tin foil hat show with Captain Freedom.

You couldn't make it up

Charlie Brookers screenwipe where he covers reality TV. Some nifty context changing via edits demonstrated there, too.
