I can see 6 GPO 2000 type heel-endslugged relays clicking away, probably acting as a timing/drive circuit for the uniselector which is rattling around at the back (which would appear to work the "level" lights?) - another two relays appear to be armature-end slugged, but from the way the contacts are moving it looks like at least one might be self interrupting and acting as a buzzer.
I assume the valves are acting as an amplifier so that the current passing through the snoggers can be bumped up to the levels needed to operate all the electromechanical bits.
1 - it's mains powered and has valves in it, I wouldn't want to grab hold of any copper pipe attatched to it at all
2 - I've got all the components in my stores - pity the bastard never published a schematic or I'd build one!

Edit: it *does* have a bell installed (black circular object top right is a doorbell) I've just noticed the flashing strings of wheatgrain bulbs - that accounts for at least some of the relays
