He actually appears in the book, not that Bale would know because he cannot read, his education being severely retarded by reaching the pinnacle of his acting talents aged 12. Cruise also comes across as a nicer man than Bale. Admittedly, there are people serving life terms for multiple violent sexual offences who are widely thought to be nicer, more rounded individuals than Christian Bale.
