it does sell a sense of tribal belonging and something to talk/fight about.

To put my level of interest in perspective
Someone asked last week whether there was some footy going on somewhere, and I genuinely didn't twig that he was joking. That said, I did enjoy catching the end of the Germany/Korea game last night.
