Parents
"They fuck you up, your mum and dad" said Philip Larkin. Did he have a point? Perhaps yours are merely horrendously embarrassing? Or are you yourself that embarrassing or terrible parent? No tedious McCannery or nonce strikethroughs please, ffs.

when I went to university
the shower in my (ENSUITE) bathroom leaked. my new flatmate told me to put down a pikey towel until someone came to fix it.
I had never heard the word before, so I asked what it meant. she said it meant a bit crap/dirty/cheap. I liked the sound of it and used it a lot.
it was an embarrassing number of years before I worked out what it really meant.
so your mum is not alone in her blissful ignorance :(
