I'm inclined to believe it's real.I'm sure someone with medical knowledge will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that rapid, extreme, changes in pressure are responsible for the majority of burst ear drums. So I would expect a lot of people to have suffered if anyone was moronic enough to smack a palm over their ears.
