Mushy pea toasties
I invented these during my student years. Now I know what you're thinking. But have faith.

Use wholemeal bread, the cheapest, nastiest mushy peas you can find, and a touch of curry powder and pepper. They'll come out of the machine hotter than a thousand suns but give them five minutes cooling time and you'll end up with a surprisingly palatable, quick snack that tastes about a gazillion times better than the sum of its parts.

That said, I can't see it getting on the menu at the Fat Duck anytime soon, but if it does I'll sue Heston for everything down to the bottle-bottom glasses he straps across his weirdly-fat face.

Toasties are the food of gods!
I bought some deer salami from Ikea one time, and put that in a toastie with some cheese and onion. The amount of fat that came out was disgusting, and the bread was stained red from all the paprika-stained oil seeping from the salami, but my God that was one hell of a lunch. If I keel over clutching my heart from pumping all that cholesterol down my aorta, I would not regret one bite of that sandwich. Not one bite.

Now
I cannot stand mushy peas, but I can appreciate this.

I like mushy pea sandwiches with brown sauce.

Mushy peas are easy to make at home, and very cheap.
The directions are on the packet. If you make a big pan of them you can water them down and add a chopped onion, a stock cube and some finely-cut ham scraps and voila! Pea'n'ham soup.

Or, better still,
don't.
