To which end there's a starter button in the rear where the engine is (so not really the boot) that you can press having hit the starter motor to unjam it first

My dad had a similar stick in his montego.
To fix the sticky fuel-cut off valve.
It used to jam open so the engine kept running once you'd turned off the ignition.
