The Dune novels...the ones by Frank Herbert. Set over 5000 years and are on the verge of being bonkers, but instead are utter genius.
Plus the game rocked...

Sadly I did...His son churns out a book a year, I wonder if he even rereads what he's written before it gets published? I'm guessing not.

The board game?Marvellous. Takes 8 hours to play and is very well balanced despite every faction having completely different strengths and weaknesses.
