The Dune novels...the ones by Frank Herbert.
Set over 5000 years and are on the verge of being bonkers, but instead are utter genius.

Plus the game rocked...

The board game?
Marvellous. Takes 8 hours to play and is very well balanced despite every faction having completely different strengths and weaknesses.

The games I've played have only taken about an hour though. I guess we haven't worked out the strategies properly.
