My mother in law is a hardcore LOTR fan, and shes despises any other of the fantasy series that made it 'big' (especially phillip pulman and Harry Potter) Not that she read any of them. I read the hobbit a few months back and was really disappointed. I didn't like the LOTR films...couldn't get into any of the characters. might read the series but im not in any major rush. His dark trilogy is one of those really special books to me, Il never forget reading it.( shame about the god awful film adaptation though)
