Peter F Hamiltons Nights Dawn Trilogy.
Sci-fi or space opera as some like to call it (Although I'd even class it as horror).
Living bitek space ships, cyborgs, tonnes of sex and violence, zombies and weapons of mass destruction. Labourious at times just due to the sheer volume of the books but well worth the effort.

Hamilton
Is my favourite author of all time. I love the scope of his stories, truly epic reading. Made Lord of the Rings seem like trying to read the phonebook for entertainment. You should really read his other set of books, the Pandora's Star and "Void" series, even more detail than Night's Dawn.

and loved it. His concepts for alien life are so imaginative and out there.

I liked the mix of sci-fi and horror.
In The Night's Dawn trilogy, I thought the genius was really the horror part of the plot allowed anyone from history to be a character. Much as I loved Pandora's Star, I still think The Night's dawn is his best work.

It is a beast, though. I wonder how many trees died for those books.

I greatly enjoyed the Void trilogy. Massively escapist, great fun to read. Many trees harmed in the making.

Great author
After reading one trilogy I just had to read all his published work. What the books lack in terms of style is made up by cracking story lines and his amazing expansive universes. Goes on a bit at times but I think that kind of adds to it. Plus I like the feeling you get when you have ploughed through several thousand pages!
