This is a question Brain Fade

Freddie Woo tells us how he recently spent ages trying to open his front door with his Oyster Card before realising he actually needed things called "keys". Tell us of times you've done stupid things while on auto-pilot

A reply about getting confused between the apple command key and ctrl reminds me.
I own a Saab. For the uninitiated, for reasons I don't know, Saab decide to eschew the usual steering lock mechanism. Their chosen method of security is to lock the car into reverse. To facilitate this, the ignition is down by the gear-stick, rather than on the steering column. This comes with several caveats:

Attempting to drive another car will result in you poking the key about the gear stick.
Parking another car will result in you putting it into reverse, even if reverse is in a completely different place on that cars box.
Driving your own car will result in you trying to put the key into the non-existent ignition on the steering column.
You will start your own car in reverse from time-to-time.

I own a Ford Fiesta and a Land Rover Defender, the Defender has the ignition lock on the left hand side of the steering column and the Fiesta has it on the right.

I spend a lot of time stabbing keys at steering columns searching for a lock that isn't there.

I sympathise...
I've owned two Saabs and know exactly how you felt. Especially unimpressive when one's better half hates Saabs and didn't want one (or the other one) in the first place!

haha, I quite like it really.
You get a fair bit of car for the price (2nd hand, at least).

When did they stop doing this on Saabs?
Cos I've just sold one after 2 years and granted, the ignition key is in the middle of the transmission tunnel, but you didn't have to leave the thing in reverse. unless you were my wife.

Dunno, this is a 2001.

Ah, right, just checked
It was standard on the 900 and before that. They got rid of it when they brought in the 9-3, I think. But left the key in transmisson tunnel anyway. Apparently it's safer in a crash. Who knew?

I always leave cars in reverse when I park up anyway... I enjoy the confusion it causes when anyone tries to drive it after me.

And yeah, feel yer pain with the Saab thing, I still do it now - got rid of the Saab 2 years ago.
