Especially when its used by news reporters who seem to get all excited whenever they say tweet because its "cool" to reference twitter.

Too right!
One of the worst offenders is Dimbleby on Question Time. When he interrupts proceedings to go on about tweeting, he sounds about as natural as the Queen would if she started speaking street slang.
