This is a question Cheap Tat

OneEyedMonster remindes us about the crap you can buy in pound shops: "Batteries that lasted about an hour and then died. A screwdriver with a loose handle so I couldn't turn the damn screw, and a tape measure which wasn't at all accurate."

Similarly, my neighbour bought a lawnmower from Argos that was so cheap the wheels didn't go round, it sort of skidded over the grass whilst gently back-combing it.

What's the cheapest, most useless crap you've bought?

Stroh 80
Do not drink this if you want to speak the next day. Do drink it if you want to go blind.

Is that
The absolutely mental rum?

It's astonishingly good...
when you need something flammable or have a dirty paint brush that needs cleaning.

Have tried it once, it really does strip your insides out and is not recommended.

Stroh Rum
I believe my parents still have a bottle of this in their house somewhere, dating back to the 1980s.

It's entirely possible that if left untouched it could count as a weapon of mass destruction.

Yup, mental Austrian rum. It's supposed to be used to top up the alcohol content of Gluhwein or whatever that mulled spicy stuff is called (the alcohol evaporates when you boil the stuff up).

I have a bottle
Who wants some?

when we were 16 and during a skiing holiday in Austria my mate decided to buy a bottle of this. Although i think it was stroh 60, not the 80 variety, but strong enough anyway.

He still insists it was snowing on the night we walked home in England in june after a party in which he had consumed this.

Stroh 80
My mate just brought me a litre back from Austria. I may just give some to my son.

I was stranded in a pub in prague in a power-cut
Well, didn't really want to leave but Stroh-80 kept me and the bar man chatting till 6am and knocked out the annoying Australian i couldn't shake off.

All in, I won't hear a bad word said against it, of course the trick is not to drink it so much as let it evaporate from your tongue (takes about 3 seconds as memory serves)

80%?
I first tried this stuff on a train after a mate brought a litre back from Austria. Neither of us had dared touch it until then but took a sip each.
'It tastes like superglue.'
'My mouth's gone numb.'
'Oh fuck I'm dribbling.'

Do not accept the 80% challenge. It involves taking a mouthful of it, undiluted. On the bright side, it numbs your entire digestive system for anything else you might want to put down it.

Marvellous stuff
Impossible to drink it neat, but gets a lot better if you dilute it. Makes passable rum truffles too, and is truly spectacular if you're setting fire to a Christmas pudding (think the vodka margarine moment from Bottom).

Stroh 80 is actually partially responsible for me and the present Miss Photon getting together - I was demonstrating how flammable it is even when diluted with a normal quantity of Coke, and she was so impressed she took me home. Of course, some might argue that's more to do with the going-blind-if-you-drink-it aspect...
