Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."
My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.
What stuff do you think is common?

Nothing wrong with wanting to be called "Mr Surname". I really object it when I go somewhere official, such as a bank, and they call me by my first name. I'm not their friend - I just want to be treated cooly and professionally...
Mr Jet Shoes esq.

but you should introduce yourself with your whole name (I'm John Doe) and they should call you Mr Doe.
Childhood conditioning is very hard to shake off :)
