This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

Sweet wrappers
IIRC the clicks that create the sound are caused by buckling transitions in the wrapper- and as these are releasing the same energy however rapidly in succession they come you can't make them quieter.
My prefered method is to click them underneath my jacket or behind my back- so there's at least _some_ deadening from the sound for everyone else.

That's right
I believe I saw this on Tomorrow's World many years ago. They concluded that since you're going to get the same number of clicks no matter what you do you're better off opening it really quickly in order to minimise the annoyance.

I tried this in a cinema the following week, but must have pulled a bit too firmly on the ends of the wrapper to unroll it, because the sweet was fired off into the darkness and made someone in one of the front rows get quite cross.
