My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

Yes!I had a chem prof once who did that, and every time she did, I wanted to leap out of my seat and throttle her with her own small intestine. But I never did, unfortunately.
