My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

There's a big difference...between being rhotic and non-rhotic, using long As and short As, having a burr or H-aspirating... and going round calling everybody a "faacking caant, innit!".
