My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

The Maddy jokes are mostly a reaction to the media circus,the fact that when a cute, middle-class, blond daughter of doctors goes missing on a foreign holiday, the papers won't shut up, whereas if she'd grown up in circumstances like Vicky Couchman's she'd most likely have vanished from the media in a matter of days. That, and the negligence shown by the McCanns in leaving a three-year-old alone in a foreign country...
Vicky Couchman may have been missing for up to 18 months, and how many of us knew who she was until a couple days ago? But try to find one person in Britain who hasn't read story ater story about Madeline McCann...
Not saying that Maddy jokes are the pinnacle of good taste, but consider the context.
