My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

Butthey are so comfy, and when you are on your feet all day then they make lovely shoes to wear in the evening. I was totally in the 'I hate them' camp till I tried on my friend's and then I was converted and therefore don't care if I look like a sheep (which is ironic as that is what they are made of) because my uggs keep me warm. And are nice when you've just danced a 2 hour rehearsal in heels, and your feet are dying.
And the proper ones are waterproof.
And I generally don't care if I look like a spaz normally so why would I care now?
My other shoes are Birkenstocks.
