My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

Bad spelling & grammar makes me cringe, too. It suggests you either don't know any different or you're too lazy to read stuff back to yourself, either of which is indeed common.
