This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

Intonation
Infuriating and very common :)

Exception
Unless you're Australian in which case it's fine.

For the record, Australians aren't common, they have raw, earthy charm.

Totally agree
And I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates this. I liked Rory McGrath's name for it: Moronic Interrogatives.
My girlfriend has started intonating and, as she goes off to work in the States next month, I fear that it's going to get worse...

I suggest
you hide her passport.

Tried that
...and she stopped all sexual favours until I returned it...
