Conned

Have you carried out a successful con? Perhaps you hustled a few quid off a stranger, or defrauded a multi-national company. Or have you been taken for the wide-eyed, naive rube that you are?

I bought
a new Renault Laguna in 2003, believing reports that it would be a better car than my previous 1997 Mk I Laguna (which was mostly trouble free).
Nope.
No end of bother. 12 warranty claims in 60000 miles. I've now done nearly 94000 miles and I'm waiting for it to explode.

Mine is
a Dynamique 2.2dCi Sport Tourer, which I enjoy driving, but it's had all manner of things go wrong with it: the entire clutch assembly, suspension bushes (twice), strut bearings (twice), track rod ends (three), brake vacuum pump, headlamp adjuster arms (twice), keycard, bent wheel, immobiliser failure, oil leak (but I got a new timing belt under warranty - woo!), water leaking in the door and heater cable not connected.
And it rattles and squeaks like hell.
Other than that, it's fine!

Could be worse
You could have bought an Alfa Romeo, expecting it to last longer than an X-Factor winner's pop career.
D'oh.

2.0 Dynamique on a 52 plate
mrs thor drives it as it it the family car, but apart from the air con needing refilling it's been wonderful. mind you it is about due for a couple of new front tyres and some new wiper blades.
i find it a great ride, when i get to drive it that is.

I bought a Golf R32
Never buy a small car with a ridiculously large engine in it.
28Mpg is the best I can hope for, especially irritating now that petrol prices are nearly a pound a litre.
That coupled with VW's notoriously poor build quality on the MKIV golf, means I have spent the best part of 20k on a pup.
Think yourselves lucky your 'gunas are costing you less than my money pit.. (Although my 0-60 time makes up for that in part).

Thor
That's another thing - 17" alloys with low profile tyres give a rather bumpy ride. I ordered it with 16" alloys but it came with the bigger ones.
And Lunar Jim - my sister has a MkIV Golf TDi 130, which is a great car, and put together really well. However, she recently bought a new Mk V GT Sport TDi, which IMO is not as good as the old one (which she now lets her husband drive!). Still does nearly 50mpg though.
