This is a question Conned

swiftyisNOTevil writes, "I have recently become obsessed with the BBC Three show 'The Real Hustle' - personally, I think of it as a 'How To' show for aspiring con artists."

Have you carried out a successful con? Perhaps you hustled a few quid off a stranger, or defrauded a multi-national company. Or have you been taken for the wide-eyed, naive rube that you are?

University con
I seems that most universities are conning the students. They really do have some completely useless courses for anyone that wants a qualification that employers are actually looking for.
Us students get thousands of pounds into debt and for what? there is no guarantee of a job at the end of it all. All the employers are looking for experience these days.
Come on universities, get your arses in gear and actually advise students what employers are looking for.

Only if you do some shitty course like
Sociology.

Do a sensible degree and there's no problem.

Okay, because I've had some beer and am feeling loquacious...
...I will unveil a deep, dark truth.

You know how most good paying positions require a degree? Well, the reason they want the degree is not because they think you'll have gotten valuable training and knowledge.

The reason is that you know how to learn, and are willing to put up with the bullshit that goes into getting a given degree. You have demonstrated a willingness to put up with bullshit, and can remain focused on the larger goal.

Really, that's the reason they want a degree. To prove that you can make it in the corporate world.

Folks, I really wish I could say that I was joking, but honestly, there's no humor in this post at all.

the sad truth..
Mr. Loon is correct.

the Loon
Beat me too it.

The type of losers who (eventually) finish uni, get their degree and whinge about it being useless are the same morons who stuffed about with no work ethic, barely passed, and now expect their magic piece of paper to land them in employment without demonstrating qualities such as commitment, diligence, organisation and self motivation.

If you're going to do Uni, do it RIGHT or yeah, you're just conning yourself.

What exactly do you expect?
Did you think that when you left university there would be a red carpet out the front of the campus, lined with people clamouring to offer you a job?

Why is the absence of this the university's fault? If you buy a pork pie from Tesco's and dont like the taste of it, do you blame them for not offering you more information about it before you committed? No of course you dont. Maybe if you'd spent more time in your A Level years researching the market, and finding out from employers what they wanted you'd not be in the situation in which you now find yourself.

Learn some responsibility for your actions, the universities wont teach you that, you get that from life.

I don't wanna rant...
... but the point of a university is not to learn skills, and it is not to get a qualification. It is about learning to think critically, to spot problems, to find a way around them to... and so on. None of that can be put into examinations, nor should it be.

It's the difference between education and training, people. Don't mix them up.

Pointless courses
I've seen degree courses mentioned in the Times Educational Supplement for the following topics:

- Equine Studies
- Golf course design
- Table setting and arrangement

Get your doilies ready...
