I was at a dinner a few years ago
and MM was the guest speaker. This was just before he became really popular, so nobody really knew who he was.

He was absolutely dire. He tried to ad-lib it, but knew nothing about the industry we work in. Didn't get a single laugh, and resorted to taking sarcastic swipes at Michael Heseltine, who was sitting at the same table as him.

He gave up after about 10 minutes.

Next year was Stewart Francis, the American one-liner guy. He wasn't much better, most of what he was saying was pretty crude, totally misjudging his audience who just quietly ignored him or hissed at the punchlines. Good stuff.
