It's because they have to try to explain stuff to the general public, who are generally thick as pigshit
Global warming would mean that the Gulf Stream stopped sending warm air and water north, so while the planet (or globe, hence global) would get warmer, this particular part of it would get colder in comparison. However, try explaining to the average Daily Mail reader that their particular corner of England is not the entire world.
