First year at university.Got back after the Christmas holidays ready for the second term and started catching up with the other people in the same halls of residence.
"Hi Mark, did you have a good Christmas?"
"Not really, my dad died."

That would probably have been a good thing to have saidI didn't think of it at the time as I was lost for words. One of the girls in the same hall came out with, "Apart from that how was Christmas?" which was possibly less appropriate.
