The two replies have missed the fact that it was the boss's stag do, the boss who heard the comment... and that a miscarriage could be upsetting for a chap too.

I imagine it's because...the OP has used the masculine for Fiance which has inferred that it was a woman at the stag do, and the man had suffered the miscarriage.
