Insurers ftw or wtf.
Just what is "protected no claim bonus"?
If you have to claim they still calculate your next premium factoring in the claim. Oh, but if you've paid the extra protection money they'll figuratively hack some phlegm onto their throbbing veiny monster-cock before administering your vigorous financial bum rape.

Dunno about that
ploughed the wife's car into a deer a couple of years ago, cost £1,800 to fix. Her insurance only went up by £20 the following year.

waiting to see
Wrote off my car a week into new policy. Claim isn't settled yet (3 weeks and counting!) so guessed settlement at a grand.
Copied quote details of current policy (still on confused.com) changing only the vehicle. New quote 600 quid.
Copied quote again including for same car but with claim entered. 900 quid!!

I always pay the extra. I've never had to make a claim.
I am now filled with confidence should my car get bashed/nicked.

It's a percentage.
It's a protected no claims discount. If you make a claim then your basic policy cost will go up, but you will still get your discount on it.
And as they can put the cost of your policy up by as much as they like, it's seldom worth paying for the discount protection.
