This is a question Creepy!

Smash Monkey asks: "what's the creepiest thing you've seen, heard or felt? What has sent shivers running up your spine and skidmarks running up your undercrackers? Tell us, we'll make it all better"

Toynbee tiles
Probably the work of one or more madmen, but there's something a bit eerie about them.

How curious.
This is one of a few really interesting links in qotw so far. Thanks.

There used to be a page
that told how to make them, but it's taken down now. Basically you cut the letters out of linoleum- the kind that's colored all the way through- and lay out your design, then take a piece of tar paper slightly larger than the letters and smear asphalt filler on it and stick it to the top surface. You then flip it over, put a thick layer of asphalt filler on the back and glue down another square of tar paper. Then on a warm spring night you go out to your street- preferably one that gets a lot of sun- and select your spot and glue the thing down with more asphalt filler. As the sun beats down on it and cars run over it, it will become part of the pavement. Gradually the top layer of tar paper and filler will wear away, revealing your design, now a permanent part of the road.

I think I'm glad the site was taken down in a way.
Imagine all the fatuous guff that might end up on the roads. Not to mention advertising...
