However, I do think that changes in density in the air overnight (either temperature or pressure changes) could fairly easily have made the balloon float lower for a while and drift round the house before rising up the stairs. It was so close to neutrally buoyant after all that a tiny change could do it.
It would be wonderful to believe that those we have lost continue to have an existence. I wish I could.
