A guy I used to get about with is son-and-heir to a stately home.
An old, old building from the 15th C or so.

We used to have to turn all the lights out when done.

Taking the dogs up with us when we were done, regularly - but not always - they would bark at one particular painting.

On one occassion, one summer's evening, one of them yelped as if kicked, and pegged it to the bedroom, and lay under the bed shivering.

It never said anything like "I, Vigo, the scourge of Carpathia, the sorrow of Moldavia, command you!"?

Edit: oddly, my last dog (sadly now passed on) would sometimes sit and stare at a particular wall in my house, and very occasionally would bark at it and then run off as if a little freaked out. My current dog, still just a puppy who I've had for about 9 months, give or take, has taken up to staring at the same wall...

That sounds like Mumspeak for "that big hairy geezer who's pounding my little boy's arsehole and calling him sweetie". I imagine.

Hey, hang about, I know what's going on in this story - the eyes move round the room when you go past the painting, don't they? And the dog shivered under the bed until you gave it a massive Scooby-snack? The janitor would have got away with it too, if it hadn't been for you interfering (with) kids...
