Creepy!
Smash Monkey asks: "what's the creepiest thing you've seen, heard or felt? What has sent shivers running up your spine and skidmarks running up your undercrackers? Tell us, we'll make it all better"

I agree
and I wonder if his sadness was at this self-knowledge, and what it meant about the rest of his life, or that he wasn't that self-aware and just sad that he couldn't contact her.

I think you're taking him too seriously.
Of course he knows he's a fraud (whoever he is). That's all there is.
If he's trying to make you sympathetic to him because he's unable to defraud himself - and you can no more do that than you can steal from yourself - then he's doubly a fraud. And if you give him even the benefit of the doubt, you're being very foolish.

But you can still cheat yourself, right?
I mean, that's what I was always taught at school when doing tests.
