Tell us of the customers who were wrong, wrong, wrong but you still had to smile at (if only to take their money.)

You're wrong about that. It's perfectly legal to record a phone call as long as one of the parties knows. So the customer is fully entitled to make a recording and is under no obligation to ask your permission or even tell you.
