This is a question What was I thinking?

CactusZack tells us: "I stopped dating a girl AFTER she got breast implants. For what reason I do not know, and I still kick myself for this." Tell us about inexplicable decisions that still haunt you.

Two Weeks Ago

Up a small step-ladder, changing a lightbulb.

"Hmm. Did I switch the light switch off? Is this fitting live?"

Stuck my finger in to find out.

While lying on the floor I discovered that our two cats can laugh.

Cheers

I did a similar
changing a metal light fitting at my sisters house, the light was turned off but the power was on which shouldnt have mattered. Unfortunately the spark who wired the place up put the switch on the common side which meant that although the light was off I was sticking a screwdriver into live wires. Somehow I managed to pass out and wake up without falling off the chair I was standing on.

The problem
is that there's still power to the fitting, just one of the wires, and hence the 'leccy flow, has been cut by the switch.

Stick your finger in there, and the other wire (with 240V happily waiting for something to flow down) will ground through your finger and make you say words in front of your kids that they'll repeat at school.

More importantly
It takes most lightbulbs a good 5 seconds to heat up when they're turned on, I usually don't bother to check the switch and just fit it quickly, if it comes straight on, bonus, I don't have to check the bulb works!
