This is a question Desperate Times

Stranded in a hotel in an African war zone with no internet access for two weeks, I was forced to resort to desperate measures. Possessing only my passport and the clothes I stood up in; and the warning "You can catch it shaking hands with a vicar out there" ringing in my ears, I had to draw my own porn in order to preserve my sanity.

Alas, it all came out looking like Coronation Street's Audrey Roberts, but, as they say, any port in a storm.

What have you done in times of great desperation?

on an educational theme
I took four years to do my A levels. It's because I only did one the first time round and needed some more to go to university. Four years doing A levels for Christ's sake!

I did get 4 As though.

I have heard that grades from 10 years+ ago are worth 2 grades higher now
So you have 4 A** grades.

smartarse :D

It was 17 years ago
So [does maths in head] that must be A****.

Only 4?
You didn't bother with the automatic A known as "General Studies", then?
(, Tue 20 Nov 2007, 15:59, closed)
general studies
is one of the four. That makes it worse, doesn't it?

A levels
Frankspencer, were your A levels in Home Economics, Creative Writing, Porn Studies and Advanced Creative Pornographic Writing?
(, Tue 20 Nov 2007, 16:09, closed)
No...
...he's just told you, one of them was General Studies - whatever the hell that is.
(, Tue 20 Nov 2007, 16:15, closed)
Worse?
Nah. Most managed about 3 Cs back then, in two years, so 3.5 points per year. You did 3 As + GS in 4 years, which is 3.75 points per year.

Analysing it to that depth, now that's really much worse.

Actually
Self-abuse
Lying
Spelling for grown-ups
Cynicism

Which is why I ended up as a low-grade journo

A-Level Self Abuse?
Presumably you only passed if you spoiled your paper?

I'm desperately trying
to think of something funny along the lines of "school of hard knocks / university of life", but sadly realise that having poor parents and a desire to provide for myself made me lose out on several years of spaffing around and a resultant lifetime of increased earnings by doing so.

I'm blue collar all the way baby! (As close as you can get while wearing a suit and working in an office, for a television broadcaster anyway)

You heard wrong. A-levels are worth the same as they've always been worth. However, a lot of kids do AS-leves now, which are worth half an A-level.

Haribo lektor
How come so many young people are thick as shit and illiterate then. I've proofread essays by current university students are less able than I was at 16.

A-levels
Well, the government would try and convince you that the A-Levels are as valid as they've always been but all other evidence points otherwise.

When I was at uni, my tutor told me that the Physics department (which shared a building with Electronics) had recently given up running their maths test for first years because whilst the test had, literally, remained unchanged in over 25 years, the marks the students were getting were dropping year-on-year and were now so low that the test itself was pointless.
