Also I would recommend the work of Jean Pierre Jeunet
One of my favourite contemporary French directors.
For a sample of his work see this simple, yet obscure 9min short, "Foutaises"
If you liked that, check out Delicatessen - a post-apocalyptic France with cannibalistic butchers and freedom-fighting vegetarians.
(And if you liked that check out "La Cité des Enfants Perdus" - a twisted adventure tale for adults and mentally disturbed children.)

I have watched Delicatessen.
It made my brain hurt, but was many years ago, might have to try again.

..
Using the French title doesn't make you appear more intelligent by the way :-)
For those who refuse to speak the language of cheese-eating surrender monkeys, it's called "City Of The Lost Children". It's very good indeed, visually stunning and stars half-man, half-ape Ron Perlman... who is currently trimming his horns for the release of Hellboy II

indeed
both films are ace.
I like the fact that the clown from Delicatessen plays four identical twin narcoleptic dwarves in City. (and then the wheelchair dude in Alien: Resurrection.
