"Part of my kitchen floor are thick with dust, grease, part of a broken mug, a few mummified oven-chips, a desiccated used teabag and a couple of pieces of cutlery", says Sandettie Light Vessel Automatic. To most people, that's filth. To some of us, that's dinner. Tell us about squalid homes or obsessive cleaners.

We have ants in our garden and they keep appearing under the path. Two years ago I pumped a load of mastic down there when I saw the first one of the year. They didn't show again until late the next year.
But some years ago, I was finding them in the house late on in the night. One of the kids leaving a half-eaten stick of rock on the dining table had them queueing in their droves. That was until I discovered Dethlac (sic)
Yes, it is a lacquer that causes death. I sprayed a line of it along the edge of the house, round the side and along the front. Along where the brickwork meets the ground.
I've not had a single ant in the house since. I applied it once in April, and that was it. It appears as a slightly shiny strip on the path, but apart from that it's pretty innocuous, it's pet and child friendly and is cheap.

Don't know if we have DETHLAC here but I'll have a look if the Ant-Rid doesn't do the job. They seem to be clustering around it quite nicely at the moment though.
Also I posted "ANT INVASION OH SHIIIIIT" as my Facebook status and now my friends are quoting Adam Ant lyrics at me, which is really less than helpful.

You can get Dethlac in Wilkinsons if you've got one near you. I'm not sure how it works, but I think they get it on their feet and then trample it all over the nest.

I meant Australia. So I don't think there is a Wilkinson's near me, sorry.

but can you get an equivalent to stop big, hairy, bastard spiders coming in?

i'll have to ask mum to pick me some up when she goes shopping. this has the added bonus that she'll pay for the stuff and won't accept reimbursements.
