I wonder what proportion of single mothers and fathers
have an unfortunate history of abuse or widow(er)hood behind them, and how many just didn't think through the consequences of an unprotected shag.

But the OP didn't mention them.
I see no complaints in the original post about rape victims, widows, or divorcees.
This is a problem -- characterising people as something they're not by inferring things they never said.
