First World Problems
Onemunki says: We live in a world of genuine tragedy, starvation and terror. So, after hearing stories of cruise line passengers complaining at the air conditioning breaking down, what stories of sheer single-minded self-pity get your goat?

Conferences
Next year, at a conference I attend, there will be several consultants who won't make it. Why?
"There's no five-star hotel on the island. My wife simply will not stay in anything less."
Diddums.....

Haha, what industry are you in?
There's a consultant coming to my uni in a few weeks who was successfully bribed with free coffee and the promise that he could rant as much as he liked at the undergrads.

It's usually the wives who kick off about conference venues.

Not worth a thread but a Professor* demanded ** of me when timetabling
that I schedule any teaching time at 10:00 or after.
Why? Because his free bus pass was only eligible from 09:00. Regardless of that, if it was that every instance of student contact with him was at 9am, it would have resulted in 20 days a year. Roughly £32 on the bus (presuming he uses the free pass to return).
Didn't see that tool protesting the fees hike.
*I include title only to suggest basic salary.
**Proud to say I endeavored to make sure he taught at 9am.***
***Needless to say...

I'll take one for the team
and go in their place.
It'll be tough, but somebody's got to do it.

Because
they won't let their menfolk go "on holiday" without them They might enjoy themselves. Plus, all of the costs of the conference (entrance fee, dinners, days out) are paid for by the hospitals the consultants work at. They claim the entire cost back as CPD - Continuous Professional Development.
A fair number of people who go to the conference don't attend a single lecture - they're just there to register and claim the CPD points (all consultants have to prove that they're continuing their education or they get slapped on the wrist). But it's all free for them.
So some treat it like a free holiday. And, as there are many conferences to choose from, some only go to the high-class or exotic ones.
To be fair, the one's who rort the system are a minority - most do attend a large number of talks or lectures. But the one's who do treat it as a holiday have one thing in common. They all have young, needy wives.
