hmmm..what if they were christmas pressies, or the old chap had spent some of his meagre pension on getting some booze in for visitors? The fact that they were bottles of very different spirits seems to suggest this rather than the smae type of his tipple of choice. I suggest this xmas you repay this guy as you say you still see him around. And the next time I see a pensioner in difficulty I'm going to ignore them and pray it's a grandparent of yours (not really! I'm not that nasty).
