Not always...I used to buy flowers on a whim for my ex, she was the colour co-ordinated type so I used to buy pink & white carnations to match the decor. During the divorce, one of the things she shouted was that I bought her carnations and she "fukcing hates carnations"!
What a thoughtless bastard I was for buying her flowers and not being a mind reader! Pft.
